Research on 448 Gbps with PAM6 and PAM8

While electrical and optical interfaces at 224 Gbps are based on ~112 GBaud PAM4, the appropriate modulation format for 448 Gbps is still a topic for researchers. The experimental results included in this document show that 448 Gbps is achievable with 150 GBaud PAM8 and 174 GBaud PAM6 with state-of-the-art Keysight’s test and measurement equipment. The highest symbol rate demonstrated with PAM4 is 200 GBaud leading to 400 Gbps data transmission rate.

 

The signal generation is performed by using the M8199B AWG.

 

The N1046A DCA is used for signal analysis. For all modulation formats considered open eye diagrams are demonstrated.

 

The 110 GHz UXR-series real-time oscilloscope is used for BER measurements. At 150 GBaud PAM8 the BER is ~1.5e-5, while for 174 GBaud PAM6 it is ~2.5e-6.
