Wavelength Dependent Polarization Measurement

Polarization dependence of optical components is most commonly measured by controlling the state of polarization (SOP) of the input signal to the device and measuring the strength of the output signal. But sometimes it is necessary to measure the SOP of the output signal instead of or in addition to that of the input signal. A typical example is measurement of wavelength-dependent differential group delay (DGD) using the Jones Matrix Eigenanalysis method. Such measurements are supported with the Keysight N7788C, together with tunable lasers and the PAS Lambda Scan software. www.keysight.com/find/n7700 For simpler applications, this note describes direct programming of a polarimeter and tunable laser to measure SOP vs. wavelength, as well as advice for using this data, considering that the SOP of the signal typically rotates along the fiber connecting to the fiberoptic polarimeter instruments. The rotation depends on wavelength as well as changing with temperature drift and fiber movement, so a simple measurement does not easily provide the orientation of the SOP measurements with respect to the device axes.
