The application of compound equalizer structures in various emerging DataCom standards presents a new set of requirements with regards to how reference receiver filter settings are configured. The goal of the standards’ methodology modeled around MMSE or Mueller-Muller techniques is not to overly optimize the equalizer structures but to define a balanced methodology which can be cost effectively implemented in silicon. Design validation measurement tools must follow the intent of the standards’ architects and implement methods to carefully track these system requirements. The process of optimization of compound equalizer structures is required to achieve conformant parametric measurements such as Vertical Eye Closure (VEC). This application note will review a case study in optimizing multi-gain-stage linear and decision feedback equalizers operating serially from a measurement systems perspective. It will investigate the interdependency of serialized Tx FFE, CTLE and DFE equalization and measurement methods as it pertains to emerging IEEE 802.3ck and CEI-112G-PAM4 specifications.
