8166A Lightwave Multichannel System Firmware

You may own an earlier firmware revision on your 8166A. While the 8166A is booting it checks automatically compliance of firmware and modules installed. In case of non-compliance you will be notified to update the firmware.

To make the 8166A compliant with newer modules by updating the firmware, you do not need to return them to Keysight Technologies.

Follow the Update Procedure below to install the newest firmware revision on your 8166A Mainframe

8166A Firmware Upgrade Procedure

To install the latest firmware revision for the Keysight 8166A, you will require a PC, running MS Windows 95/98/2000/XP or NT 4.0 and a serial null-modem cable (supplied with your Keysight 8166A mainframe).

Download the file below to a directory on your PC.

1. Connect the serial cable
2. Run the execute file and extract the contents to a directory on your PC
3. Click on HPFlashWinR5.exe to start the HPFLASH software.
4. Click on the ''File Selection'' button, the file selection box appears.
5. Move to the file "66_flxxx.bin" and click on OK. (66_flxxx.bin - xxx represents latest revision no.)
6. Click on ''Port Settings''.
7. Select the com port where the serial cable is connected.
8. Choose the maximum baud rate.
9. Click on OK.
10. Turn on the 8166A and wait for the first beep.
11. Press and hold the [Preset] hardkey
12. Still holding [• Preset], press and hold the [Aux] hardkey
13. Still holding [Preset] and [Aux], press and hold the [Appl] hardkey
    Tip: As this procedure takes only a second, use three fingers and place them near the hardkeys in advance!

• If you were successful, you hear a double beep and the display shows that the instrument is in download mode.
• Otherwise, turn off the power and try again.
• Click on ''Program'' and wait until the download completes. The instrument will reboot with the new firmware.
