Spatial BeamPROP Interface: Waveguide Example

This application note shows how to use the Spatial BeamPROP Interface to simulate a silicon on insulator (SOI) rib waveguide for coupling an externally modulated laser to multimode fiber. The simulation is done using ModeSYS and BeamPROP.

 

The link includes a laser transmitter, couplers to model alignment issues, the rib waveguide (simulated via BeamPROP), 300 meters of multimode fiber and a receiver. Using ModeSYS scan features, we analyze how the bit-error rate (BER) is affected by factors like vertical misalignment and the laser beam’s spot size.

 

This example demonstrates how the Spatial BeamPROP Interface makes it possible to simulate complex device geometries in the context of a link simulation.
