INTRODUCTION

There are many types of power supplies that you can use in your lab or on the manufacturing line. A power supply’s primary function is to convert a generic supply of electrical energy into a form of energy usable by the device under test (DUT). In the case of a DC power supply, the goal is to convert AC power from the wall into userdefinable DC power.

 

In this e-book, we look at the basic architecture of the two main types of DC power supplies: linear and switching.

  • A linear supply creates DC power using a transformer to control the output
  • A switching supply uses a transistor switching architecture to control the output Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
