Overview
In 2003, roughly 500 million cellular devices shipped—each with 1-2 radios and an estimated 750 million required “radio” tests. By 2015, shipments are expected to top 3 billion devices. Unlike the handsets of 2003, however, these next-generation variants will feature 6-8 radios and require 28 times more testing (roughly 21 billion “radio” tests). Nowhere is this more evident than when it comes to LTE devices. Most LTE smartphones are expected to support some combination of W-CDMA, cdma2000®, GSM, and their enhanced variants. Verification testing each of these formats and bands multiplies manufacturing test times and correspondingly increases the test cost.
