Determining the Boundary Line between Normal Versus Excessive Self-Discharge on Lithium-Ion Cells

Testing self-discharge on lithium-ion cells is a very high priority for test engineers for good reason; it is a critical parameter that all cells need to be tested for during manufacturing. All cells have some selfdischarge. This is normal and expected. However, excessive self-discharge is an indicator of underlying defects that could lead to failure later in life.

A significant challenge to testing self-discharge in cells is determining what constitutes normal selfdischarge versus what is excessive self-discharge. To do this one needs to look at the distribution of the population’s self-discharge and then identify and remove the outliers from the main population. By applying statistical means, this application note demonstrates how to determine where the boundary line should lie between what is normal versus what is excessive self-discharge in lithium-ion cells, to assist in removing the outliers having excessive self-discharge.
