Lesson 3 - CAN Standard and Extended Format

Lesson 6 - CAN Bit Timing and Arbitration

The bit timing and arbitration mechanisms used by CAN buses. The lesson covers the different factors that affect bit timing, as well as how arbitration is used to resolve conflicts between nodes on the bus.

Lesson 7 - Demo Time! CAN Bus Arbitration

How CAN bus arbitration works. The lesson shows how nodes compete for access to the bus and how the arbitration winner is determined.

Lesson 8 - Eye-diagram Testing

Eye-diagram testing, a technique used to measure the quality of a CAN signal. The lesson covers the different parameters that can be measured from an eye diagram, as well as how to interpret the results of eye-diagram testing.

Lesson 9 - Demo Time! CAN Eye-diagram Testing

Provides a demo of how to use eye diagrams to test the quality of CAN signals. An eye diagram is a graphical representation of the signal's edges, and it can be used to identify problems such as jitter, noise, and attenuation.

Lesson 10 - CAN FD

Discusses the CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) protocol, which is an extension of the standard CAN protocol. CAN FD can transmit data at much faster speeds than standard CAN, making it ideal for use in applications such as autonomous driving and vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

Oscilloscope Measurement Tools to Help Debug Automotive Serial Buses Faster

An oscilloscope has an inherent ability to characterize the analog quality of automotive serial buses such as Controller Area Network (CAN), CAN FD, and Local Interconnect Network (LIN). That is why engineers often use oscilloscopes to debug and characterize these signals. Performing analog characterization using an oscilloscope is known as taking physical-layer measurements.   When analyzing the physical layer, the oscilloscope must operate at its fastest speed so you can see any infrequent errors on your buses that could cause serious defects. You can only see these infrequent errors if your oscilloscope is doing serial decoding in hardware. Software decoding causes an oscilloscope to run too slowly to catch any rare events.   Many oscilloscopes on the market offer automotive-focused options. This provides a composite picture of the overall quality of a system’s physical layer characteristics, which includes amplitude variations, timing uncertainties, and infrequent signal anomalies.
