In-car audio systems are not new. They have been part of vehicles for a long time. What has changed is the increasing integration of audio and information systems with the built-in electronic systems in vehicles.

Current generation of in-car infotainment systems not just provide entertainment, but add information and services useful to drivers for safety, communications and navigation.

Sophisticated infotainment systems are enabled for the latest digital audio and video services, GPS and communication systems such as Bluetooth® and WLAN.

Keysight TS-5030 Automotive Infotainment Functional Test System

The Keysight Technologies, Inc. TS-5030 automotive infotainment test system is an off-the-shelf functional test solution for automotive infotainment product testing, extending the TS-5000 family’s test capabilities beyond safety and engine electronics, as well as body control modules test, to infotainment electronics.

The Keysight TS-5030 provides infotainment test extensions using:

  • Keysight E4438C Vector Signal Generator to generate analog and digital signals for formats such as DAB, DVB, ISDB-T, AM/FM/RDS and TAC
  • Audio signal generator, audio analyzer and audio load unit, for AM/FM parametric and functional test
  • Keysight N9360A Wireless Handset Test System for cellular format tests
  • Keysight N4010A Wireless Connectivity Test Set for Bluetooth and WLAN functional test
  • Keysight 34980A Switch/Measurement Unit for RF switching and measurement

Keysight E4438C Vector Signal Generator

The Keysight E4438C Vector Signal Generator provides unparalleled flexibility for generating both analog and digital signals used in modern communications. Be it an open standard or proprietary protocol, the E4438C is equipped with the capability to generate all these signals. Even for non-standard signals, or signals to be experimented, the E4438C provides the ease to supplement all test systems with the correct and desired signal protocol.

With the limit of a 64MB internal baseband generator memory, the E4438C can hold various simple I/Q files to enable quick verification of the DUTs. However, for more complex signals requiring a much larger I/Q file, the Keysight N5101A Baseband Studio card would allow I/Q files to be stored on the controller and streamed directly into the E4438C.

This effectively increases the space availability for an I/Q file tremendously. With the constant increase of hard disk storage capacity, coupled with RAID configurations, this setup provides a powerful setup for signal generation.

Just customize your desired signal onto an I/Q file, then playback using a single instrument to maximize the utilization of that instrument.

Navigation Systems (GPS)

Single Satellite. A single satellite signal can be generated using the I/Q file playback capability of the E4438C. Whether it’s a signal to detect just the satellite or to include navigational data, the flexible I/Q file playback feature allows your test engineers to predefine the data for signal generation. Figure 3 explains the process of GPS single satellite file creation using I/Q playback.

Multi Satellite. Multi satellite simulation enables a more complete solution to test a GPS receiver functionality. For triangulation, GPS receivers commonly need 4 separate satellite signals. At any given time, a constel­lation of 12 satellites could be detected by a GPS receiver. The Keysight E5101A Baseband Studio card and PC controller are included to simulate up to 12 satellite signals.

The type of data required can be predefined.

AM/FM/RDS (Radio Data System) Simulation

A simple and straightforward simulation is performed initially with a common audio signal for both AM/ FM signals. The audio signal is then channeled to an RDS-enabled signal generator, coding the audio signal and modulating it into an RF signal which is then transmitted together with the RDS data.

The transmitted signal is then demodulated by the DUT, played back and the output channeled to the audio loads for analysis by the audio analyzer. The original audio signal is used as a reference by the audio analyzer, which is compared to the output of the audio loads.

Mobile Communication Test & Verification

The TS-5030 integrates the Keysight N9360A Wireless Handset Test System, for fast verification and test for mobile communication modules. The Keysight N9360A supports several mobile communications standards including GSM/GPRS/EDGE and W-CDMA, with an upgrade path to support CDMA 2000, 1xEV-DO, HSDPA and TD-SCDMA in future.

The N9360A tester is used to perform functional verifications of communications modules including:

  • Call initiation and pickup
  • Transmitter power accuracy test
  • Frequency and phase error test
  • Sensitivity test
  • Call termination

Wireless Connectivity

In-car wireless connectivity is a growing need in automotive infotainment system, for example, the increasing use of Bluetooth to connect mobile phones to the in-car communication modules. The TS-5030 adds Keysight N4010A Wireless Connectivity Test Set to test Bluetooth, WLAN, MIMO and ZigBee devices and subsystems.

Audio Load Box

The audio load box design currently handles up to 6 channels of audio load simulation: 4 fixed with switchable loads of 2/4/8 ohms and 2 with customizable load channels which can be specified as required.

Table 1 depicts audio load box specifications for various channel types. Load specifications other than stated below can also be supported. With the audio switching controlled via the 34980A Switch/Measurement Unit using a custom design module, the audio load box solution provides greater flexibility for modifications, allowing expandability of channels as well as load types when required.
