How to Evaluate Automotive Radar Multipath Performance

Reproduce Direct and Indirect Radar Reflections

Multipath radar validation requires synchronized direct and indirect reflection paths with controlled delay, angle, motion, and amplitude. Engineers configure multiple point reflections that represent the primary target response and secondary propagation paths, then exercise the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) radar while monitoring how the combined returns affect target detection, range, angle, and track behavior. Repeatable control of the individual reflections is used to construct the propagation scenario.

The test is repeated while reflection-path delay, amplitude, geometry, and relative phase are varied to reproduce different multipath conditions. Engineers compare measured radar response and perception outputs with the programmed reflection model, looking for interference patterns, shifted detections, missed objects, or additional apparent targets. Synchronizing reflections keeps the multipath environment deterministic, linking radar behavior to specific propagation conditions.

Automotive Radar Multipath Validation Solution

To perform the test, engineers must synchronize multiple point reflections to create direct and indirect propagation paths for the radar sensor. The Keysight Radar Scene Emulator can be used to control the range, angle, motion, and amplitude of each reflection so engineers can reproduce multipath conditions without changing the physical environment. Reflection paths can be varied systematically to generate constructive and destructive interference and observe the resulting detection, range, angle, and tracking behavior. The solution supports repeatable comparison between programmed propagation conditions and measured radar response, enabling controlled evaluation of dense clutter and low-grazing-angle scenarios where multipath effects are common.
