How to Validate Automotive Radar Using HIL

Close The Loop with Radar Hardware

Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) radar validation requires synchronized scenario data, a real radar sensor, radar scene generation, and closed-loop exchange with the vehicle or system model. Engineers run a driving scenario while a radar scene emulator applies time-synchronized radio-frequency reflections to the physical sensor. The sensor response is processed by the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) stack, and detected objects or vehicle-control outputs are returned to the HIL environment.

The closed-loop test is repeated while road geometry, object motion, target density, and sensor conditions are varied within the same scenario framework. Engineers compare radar detections and downstream system responses with ground-truth scene data while preserving deterministic timing between the scene generator, emulator, sensor, and HIL model. Integration with three-dimensional modelers allows realistic road scenes to drive the physical radar interface while the HIL system updates vehicle behavior for the next simulation step.

Automotive Radar HIL Validation Solution

To perform the test engineers need to synchronize a driving-scenario model, radar scene generation, the physical radar sensor, and the HIL system. The Keysight Radar Scene Emulator converts scenario objects into time-aligned radar reflections applied to the real sensor, while sensor and control outputs return to the HIL environment to close the loop. Its open architecture supports integration with existing HIL systems and three-dimensional modelers, allowing engineers to repeat deterministic road scenarios while exercising actual sensor hardware. The workflow bridges software simulation and vehicle testing by combining controlled virtual scenarios with measured radar response and closed-loop system behavior.
