How to Validate Automotive Radar Perception Algorithms

Exercise Perception Algorithms With Realistic Radar Scenes

Radar perception validation requires a controllable radio-frequency environment, a radar sensor under test, synchronized scene data, and a method for comparing detected objects with the intended scene. A radar scene emulator (RSE) generates multiple point reflections with independently controlled range, angle, motion, and amplitude so the sensor receives a repeatable representation of a driving scenario.

The test sequence applies stationary and moving targets across the radar field of view while the perception stack processes the sensor response. Engineers vary object spacing, density, distance, and reflection paths, then compare the reported tracks or object list with the programmed scene. Multipath conditions can be introduced by synchronizing direct and indirect reflections and evaluating the resulting interference pattern.

Automotive Radar Perception Validation Solution

To perform the test, engineers must present the radar sensor with synchronized point reflections that represent a programmed road scene. The solution uses the Keysight Radar Scene Emulator to generate repeatable automotive radar scenes for perception and system-validation workflows. It supports controlled target range, angle, motion, density, and reflection behavior across a contiguous field of view. Engineers can exercise object-detection and tracking algorithms against near and far targets, dense scenes, and multipath conditions without changing the physical test environment. The emulator can be integrated with three-dimensional scene generators and hardware-in-the-loop systems so the radar response and downstream perception outputs can be evaluated against the same deterministic scenario.
