Defining a new communication network so different than existing automotive networks brings huge challenges. As with any new technologies, the migration of existing networks to Ethernet-based networks started slowly, one application at a time. Initial targets were to make sure one application on automotive Ethernet could coexist with existing CAN/Flexray-based networks hosting the other applications.

Therefore, the major validation need was to ensure that automotive electronic control units (ECUs) properly implement the higher layers that traditionally run over Ethernet (the TCP/IP stack). They also included new protocols that had been adapted for automotive use such as AVB, as well as new automotive-specific protocols like SOME/IP.
