This application note demonstrates how to model a polarization splitter using DiffractMOD, based on a diffraction grating design. The structure consists of a periodic array of rib-like features and is designed to separate light based on polarization.

 

The simulation focuses on analyzing how the structure diffracts Transverse Electric (TE) and Transverse Magnetic (TM) polarized light. Although multiple periods of the grating are created in the layout, only a single period is used for the simulation to reduce computation time. The resulting diffraction efficiencies show clear differences between the polarizations and match well with published results.
