How to De-Risk Network Migrations with Automated Testing

Automate Network Migration Validation

After a merger or acquisition, operators must move millions of subscribers across many market regions onto a new network while keeping calls, data sessions, and subscriber experience intact. Each market migration requires the test team to baseline call and network performance before configuration changes, repeat the same checks afterward, and confirm that traffic is routed to the correct core elements. Misconfigurations, such as traffic homing to a distant gateway, increase latency, delay, and jitter and reduce throughput, so they must be found and corrected before subscribers notice.

Traditional migration testing depends on sending technicians to every region for call testing and on truck rolls to base stations when problems appear, an approach that does not scale to 100 or more markets supported by a small engineering team. Support teams also receive alerts from passive and third-party monitoring systems that can produce false positives, such as reported Mean Opinion Score (MOS) degradation caused by a faulty probe. Engineers need an independent source of active measurements to confirm whether a reported issue is in the network or the monitoring tool, reducing rework and mean time to repair (MTTR).

Automated Network Migration Testing Solution

The Keysight VisionWorks Service Assurance Platform automates migration testing with distributed test agents and remote call-through testing, so a small team can validate every market without dispatching field technicians. Engineers run the same procedures before and after each configuration change to verify call performance, traffic routing, latency, and subscriber experience, and use path and topology results to pinpoint misconfigurations. VisionWorks also provides a second layer of active validation to corroborate passive or third-party monitoring results, isolating whether an issue lies in the core, the radio access network (RAN), or the monitoring system itself. A Tier 1 operator's three-engineer team used VisionWorks to migrate more than 50 million customers across over 100 markets ahead of schedule and under budget, finding Phoenix traffic misrouted to a gateway in Hawaii and tracing a false MOS alarm to a faulty third-party probe.
