How to Measure Current in Low-Power Medical Devices

Device Current Waveform Analyzer

Optimizing battery life in medical devices with a current waveform analyzer

Measuring and optimizing power in a medical device requires measuring power consumption over time to validate the intelligent power management of the medical device during operation. This use case requires measuring the current waveform from a low sleep current (< 1 mA) to a high current active mode without missing any signals.

A current waveform analyzer can measure power consumption at the chip level within a medical device module or component. It provides insight into peak currents, average currents, transient behavior and other characteristics of the current waveform. In addition, it enables design engineers to understand patterns in current waveforms to identify anomalies and pinpoint areas for efficiency improvements.

Current measurement solution for medical devices

To measure and optimize the power consumption of medical devices, it is necessary to measure power consumption over time. Keysight’s solution includes a current waveform analyzer and data logger mode software, which can capture data for up to 100 hours.

The analyzer is ideal for low-power measurements in medical devices, with current measurement capabilities down to 150 pA, enabling behavior analysis during sleep mode. Using artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) technology, the data logger option supports anomalous waveform analytics (AWA) that enables engineers to identify rare, anomalous waveforms fast.
