Accurate side-channel analysis depends on the quality of the acquired signal. Smart card tools are designed to improve signal integrity, reduce noise, and enable precise measurements when evaluating smart cards, secure elements, and other security-critical devices. By providing dedicated hardware for power tracing, filtering, and signal conditioning, these tools help security engineers acquire the high-quality measurement data required for effective side-channel analysis.
Whether performing power analysis on contact-based smart cards or electromagnetic analysis on contactless solutions, specialized measurement hardware can significantly improve signal visibility and reduce interference that may obscure security-relevant information. These capabilities are particularly important when identifying subtle leakage sources, validating countermeasures, or conducting advanced security evaluations.
From generating clean power traces to filtering carrier frequencies in contactless environments, smart card tools provide the foundation for reliable and repeatable measurements, helping engineers focus on security insights rather than measurement challenges.

DS1220A
The DS1220A Smartcard Power Tracer precisely measures power consumption for simple power analysis (SPA) and differential power analysis (DPA).
The DS1220A Smartcard Power Tracer helps identify power-based attacks, including simple power analysis (SPA) and differential power analysis (DPA). Using low-noise and high-bandwidth analog components that are electrically isolated from a smartcard’s digital circuitry, the Smartcard Power Tracer provides output with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio for precise measurement of power consumption. The capacitors inside the DS1220A are pre-charged to power the smartcard during each measurement to avoid any external noise in the circuit and maintain stable smartcard voltage.
DS1221A
The DS1221A Notch Filter and Demodulator reduces quantization error and achieves a better signal-to-noise ratio when testing for side channel leakage.
When testing for side channel leakage in a contactless solution, a reader’s 13.56 MHz carrier wave introduces significant noise during measurement. The Notch Filter and Demodulator consists of analog filters that reduce the radio frequency signal while preserving the leakage signal from a contactless smart card. As a result, you can reduce the input voltage range of the digital oscilloscope to minimize the quantization error and consequently achieve a better signal-to-noise ratio. While the DS1221A is designed to be used in combination with the High Precision Electromagnetic Probe for electromagnetic radio frequency analysis or Micropross MP300 TCL2 RF antenna for radio frequency analysis, the filter can be used with any side channel test system.

Smart Card Tools help improve signal quality during side-channel analysis evaluations. They are designed to support power tracing, filtering, signal conditioning, and measurement optimization when testing smart cards, secure elements, and other security-critical devices.
Side-channel attacks often rely on identifying very small variations in a measured signal. Noise, interference, and poor signal quality can make leakage more difficult to detect. Signal conditioning and filtering help improve the quality and reliability of collected measurement data.
Power tracing is the process of measuring a device's power consumption during operation. Security engineers analyze these measurements to identify side-channel leakage and evaluate the security of cryptographic implementations.
These tools can be used with a variety of security-sensitive devices, including:
The DS1220A Smartcard Power Tracer helps acquire clean and reliable power consumption measurements from smart card targets, enabling accurate side-channel analysis and leakage evaluation.
The DS1221A helps improve measurements by filtering unwanted carrier frequencies and conditioning signals during contactless smart card evaluations. This can make security-relevant information easier to observe and analyze.
Not necessarily. The need for these tools depends on the target device, testing methodology, and signal quality requirements. Some evaluations may benefit significantly from dedicated power tracing or signal conditioning hardware, while others may not require additional instrumentation.
