Learn Practical Techniques for Faster SMPS Validation

This application note shows how to characterize and validate switch mode power supplies (SMPS). You’ll learn:

  • How to measure critical input power parameters including power quality, current harmonics, and inrush current to ensure compliance and reliable operation.

  • How to analyze switching behavior by measuring switching losses, drain-to-source on-resistance (Rds(on)), and slew rates to optimize efficiency and performance.

  • How to validate output power integrity through ripple, transient response, turn-on/turn-off timing, and efficiency measurements.

  • How automated power analysis software simplifies setup, accelerates debug, and delivers repeatable measurements across the power conversion system.

Power Supply Characterization, Accelerated by the MXR

The power supply test software for the MXR oscilloscope, simplifies power supply validation with automated characterization measurements, including power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) and control loop response (Bode plots). Multi-channel waveform mask testing also enables detailed turn-on and turn-off analysis of up to eight power supply rails.

Combine the MXR's low-noise measurement architecture and hardware-accelerated analysis with the power supply testing software to deliver fast, reliable results. With up to 6 GHz bandwidth, up to 8 analog channels, and a fast 16 GSa/s sample rate, the MXR streamlines power supply debug and validation.
