Battery Life – A Key to IoT Success
The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing rapidly, with billions of devices added annually. These devices serve a diverse set of applications, and they use a wide variety of wireless technologies – from RFID to wide area networks.
Customer preference, economic viability, and safety
Many IoT devices run on battery power, sometimes rechargeable and sometimes not. For rechargeable batteries, long battery runtime may be a key differentiator that drives customer preference. If the batteries are not rechargeable, or they are difficult to access—think of a remote weather sensor—long battery life may be essential to the economic viability of a project. Beyond economics, consider IoT wireless medical devices. Premature failure of a wireless medical device can have safety implications, and if the device is implanted in the human body, changing the battery is expensive and introduces risk to the patient.
