How to Simulate Realistic GNSS Environments

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers must operate reliably across a wide range of environments, from open skies to dense urban areas where buildings, obstructions, and interference can affect satellite signal reception.

Validating receiver performance under these conditions can be challenging. Live-sky testing exposes receivers to realistic satellite signals, but environmental conditions, satellite visibility, and signal quality are constantly changing. This makes it difficult for engineers to reproduce specific scenarios, isolate performance issues, or compare receiver behavior across different test runs.

GNSS Simulation Solution

GNSS simulation enables engineers to recreate satellite signal conditions in a controlled laboratory environment, providing a repeatable alternative to live-sky testing.

Using a GNSS simulator, engineers can define satellite constellations, receiver trajectories, signal levels, and environmental conditions to evaluate receiver performance across a range of operating scenarios. Depending on the simulator's capabilities, tests can incorporate satellite visibility changes, signal attenuation, multipath, and interference effects.

By reproducing these conditions in the laboratory, engineers can investigate receiver acquisition, tracking, positioning accuracy, and navigation performance using consistent test scenarios.

The ability to repeat identical conditions allows development teams to isolate receiver issues, compare design changes, and validate performance more efficiently.

The result is a more controlled and efficient GNSS validation process that combines realistic satellite signal simulation with the repeatability needed for systematic receiver testing.
