Real-time spectrum analysis (RTSA) allows for capturing and analyzing transient and intermittent signals that traditional swept-tuned analyzers might miss. Real-time spectrum analyzers are electronic devices that measure a signal's strength and frequency domain. They use a process called Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which converts the signal into a series of numbers representing the amplitude of each frequency component.
The RTSA displays the domain information on a graph, which will help identify any problems with the signal, such as too much noise or distortion. This is particularly useful for spectrum monitoring, interference detection, and signal troubleshooting.
RTSA provides a more accurate picture of the signal environment. It analyzes the signal continuously, providing a "true" representation of the signal's behavior.
Wide analysis bandwidth in a signal or spectrum analyzer is essential for capturing and analyzing signals that span large frequency ranges or change rapidly over time. For example, high-frequency signals or transient behaviors, such as pulses or sharp frequency shifts, require a broad bandwidth to ensure accurate measurement. Narrower bandwidths may fail to capture these fast transitions, leading to incomplete or distorted analysis. Additionally, modern wireless communication systems like 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi transmit wideband signals that need to be captured in a single sweep to avoid time-consuming, fragmented measurements.
A wide bandwidth also enhances the ability to measure complex signals with multiple components, such as harmonics, intermodulation products, and spurious emissions, across a broad spectrum. It enables real-time monitoring of signal behavior, faster data acquisition, and minimizes the risk of aliasing, which can distort the signal. In addition, for systems that use complex modulation schemes, wide bandwidth ensures a complete and accurate analysis of the full modulation spectrum, including sidebands and carriers.
Phase noise performance in a signal or spectrum analyzer is essential for obtaining precise and reliable spectral measurements. It directly impacts the instrument’s ability to accurately detect and analyze signals, especially in situations where weak signals are present, or precise frequency measurements are required. High phase noise in the analyzer itself can cause signal distortions, broadening the spectrum, or introducing spurious signals, making it difficult to measure signals accurately. For instance, when measuring narrowband signals, high phase noise can lead to incorrect bandwidth readings or mask the signal you are trying to measure altogether.
Phase noise is also critical when measuring weak signals near the spectrum analyzer’s noise floor or when distinguishing closely spaced signals with minimal frequency offsets. A spectrum analyzer with low phase noise ensures that weak signals are accurately detected and prevents signal overlap, allowing for precise frequency analysis. By minimizing phase noise, a spectrum analyzer can provide a cleaner, more accurate representation of the signal, avoid false readings, and extend the dynamic range, enabling the measurement of both weak and strong signals without interference from the analyzer's own noise characteristics.
