A surface-mount device (SMD) refers to a type of electronic component designed to directly mount onto a printed circuit board (PCB). Modern electronic devices and systems use SMD resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits (ICs) to optimize for both size and performance. Due to their smaller size and greater reliability, SMDs allow for more compact and densely packed circuit designs.
Similar to other components, SMDs require the following tools for impedance measurements and parametric testing:
Engineers need additional fixtures, like the bottom electrode SMD test fixture, to connect the device to the instrument for the SMD tests.
Engineers most commonly use benchtop or handheld multimeters, capacitance meters, LCR meters to perform parametric measurements on SMDs. An SMD tester, often referred to as SMD tweezers, is a specialized fixture designed for testing the electrical properties of SMDs while offering better noise immunity than separate probes.
