High Dynamic Range Optical Attenuator

The N7765C high dynamic range optical attenuator is particularly suitable for optical amplifier test where wavelength flatness is key, for power leveling with high input power, and for single photon generation through daisy-chaining multiple channels with 60 dB attenuation range.

Highlights

The N7765C high dynamic range optical attenuator for single-mode fiber offers the highest attenuation range in the product family, the lowest wavelength dependence and includes an optical shutter, thanks to its bulk-optical architecture. It is available in single-channel and dual-channel configuration.

Applications

  • Optical amplifier testing
  • Optical transceiver testing
  • Optical network integration testing
  • Single photon generation

Attenuation setting

N7765C operates strictly in attenuation mode: the calibrated value of attenuation in dB is set directly. Its low wavelength dependence makes the N7765C the best choice for the test of optical amplifiers where a broad spectrum needs to be attenuated with minimal wavelength skew. Also, its built-in optical shutter allows to insulate an amplifier under test from any input signal, e.g., to enable ASE spectral analysis.

High input power

Whether pump lasers or booster amplifiers are in the optical path, bringing strong signals down to allow waveform testing, or attenuating high signal power levels for bit error ratio testing is possible with the N7765C due to its high maximum input power rating that by far exceeds the rating of the other attenuators in the family.

Single photon generation

Combined with the N7747C high sensitivity power meter, the N7765C high dynamic range attenuator enables creating those low power levels required for single photon generation experiments: the dual-channel version N7765C option 200 allows for daisy-chaining multiple 60-dB-attenuator stages, providing sufficient attenuation and reproducibility, while the N7747C's sensitivity can help measuring the complete attenuation of each stage including connectors.
