Testing open radio access network (O-RAN) radio unit (O-RU) conformance to the 5G New Radio (NR) standard requires analysis of the radio frequency (RF) response of the O-RU. The O-RU executes C-plane commands without an acknowledgment back to the O-RAN distributed unit (O-DU). These messages transmit at extremely high data rates and have a very tight timing tolerance. Engineers need to analyze the RF response of the O-RU to determine whether it understands and correctly acts on the O-DU’s commands.
The test system includes the O-RU as the device under test, O-DU emulator, signal analyzer, and signal source. The test system requires synchronization to a common clock to ensure alignment within the entire system and adherence to tight timing tolerances. A comprehensive O-RAN RU compliance test requires an integrated and automated setup to configure test cases for design validation and manufacturing according to the conformance test requirements.
