Measure Radar Pulse Transition Duration

Radar pulse transition duration is measured by capturing the pulse power waveform with enough time resolution to identify reference levels on the rising and falling edges. The measurement establishes consistent pulse-top and baseline levels, then calculates the interval between the selected levels. IEEE Standard 181-2011 defines the terminology used for these measurements.

A power meter and sensor capture the pulse waveform and calculate transition duration from configured reference levels. Engineers can adjust the time scale to capture the full pulse, select 10%, 50%, and 90% or 1%, 25%, and 81% reference levels, and apply trigger hysteresis and hold-off to stabilize noisy or digitally modulated pulse measurements.

Measure Radar Pulse Transition Solution

Measuring radar pulse transitions requires a power waveform capture that resolves the selected reference levels across the rising and falling edges. The measurement should use a time scale wide enough to capture the complete transition and pulse top, while avoiding excessive scale that reduces time resolution. Keysight peak power meters and power sensors measurement solutions support configurable reference levels for transition-duration and pulse-duration calculations. Engineers can use hysteresis to reject noisy threshold crossings and trigger hold-off to prevent multiple triggers within digitally modulated bursts. External triggering, reduced video bandwidth, and video averaging can further improve measurements near the noise floor. The result is a repeatable method for measuring radar pulse rise and fall transitions while maintaining the selected measurement criteria.
