Verifying O-RAN Node Performance Before Deployment

Open RAN splits the traditional base station into four discrete nodes — the Radio Unit (O-RU), Distributed Unit (O-DU), Centralized Unit (O-CU), and RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) — connected by open fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul interfaces. Each node requires wraparound testing that emulates all surrounding network functions to validate performance in isolation.

O-RU testing requires real-time, state-machine-based emulation of the O-DU and upper layers to benchmark radio performance under varied conditions, configurations, and live traffic scenarios. O-DU testing activates thousands of emulated UEs and multiple RUs in a virtualized environment to assess capacity and support CI/CD/CT pipelines. O-CU validation emulates thousands of UEs, millions of sessions, and thousands of DUs and RUs to test protocol handling, call flow, and scalability. RIC testing generates the full range of real network conditions and topologies to validate conformance, interoperability, and AI/ML optimization across diverse vendor implementations. A unified test platform must support bidirectional emulation, pre-built test libraries, and automated execution across all node types through a single interface.

O-RAN Nodal Validation Solution

O-RAN nodal validation requires wraparound emulation of all surrounding network functions for each node type. The Keysight O-RAN validation platform provides real-time bidirectional emulation, pre-built test libraries for performance and compliance, and automated execution through a single interface across O-RU, O-DU, O-CU, and RIC.
