Measure PTP Clock Time Error

A Precision Time Protocol (PTP) timing-accuracy measurement uses a known time reference, a packet timing interface, and a device or network path configured for the required telecom PTP profile. The tester acts as a TimeTransmitter, TimeReceiver, or observation endpoint according to the clock topology being evaluated. The engineer selects the message rate, clock class, network connection, and reference input before collecting timestamps and frequency-related data. Test setup includes identifying the packet path, ensuring that all clock roles are configured consistently, and selecting the observation interval. The measurement is then started after the link and clock state have reached the defined starting condition.

Analysis focuses on time error and its behavior over the measurement interval. Raw timing observations can be evaluated together with derived clock-quality quantities such as maximum time interval error or time deviation where supported by the selected analysis configuration. The engineer separates transient acquisition, locked operation, and holdover or impairment periods in the recorded trace. Packet delay variation, load conditions, and changes to timing quality announcements can be introduced to characterize the response when the test capability is installed. Interpretation uses the applicable clock class and network limit rather than an assumed universal pass criterion. Stored data allow comparison of equivalent tests across different traffic profiles and network paths.

PTP Fronthaul Timing Accuracy Test Solution

Measure fronthaul Precision Time Protocol (PTP) accuracy by configuring a reference clock, selecting the protocol profile, and measuring packet-derived time error under controlled network conditions. Keysight Time Sync Analyzer supports PTP TimeTransmitter and TimeReceiver emulation, telecom profiles, clock-quality analysis, and concurrent measurements when the corresponding hardware and software options are installed. Its timing card provides reference interfaces; Ethernet line cards provide packet test ports and timestamp capture. The TimeSync data sheet also describes impairment generation and background data traffic that can be combined with synchronization flows to evaluate realistic operating conditions. Engineers can compare steady-state operation with transient conditions, analyze live or offline data, and apply standard or custom masks. The base appliance alone should not be treated as a complete PTP generation-and-measurement configuration; verify the line-card speed enablement and software option before publishing a bill of materials.
