Establish a Clean RF Reference

Establishing an RF reference starts with generating a controlled signal whose residual impairments remain sufficiently below the behavior you need to characterize. The setup requires an RF signal generator and the appropriate measurement instrument for the parameter under test. Evaluate the source contribution from phase noise, amplitude modulation (AM) noise, broadband noise, harmonics, non-harmonic spurious signals, and RF level before using that signal as the measurement reference.

Set the required carrier frequency and output level, connect the source through the appropriate calibrated signal path, and characterize the reference under the same conditions used for the device or instrument under test. Compare the expected measurement range with the source's residual noise and distortion so the reference does not unnecessarily mask the behavior under evaluation. Where level is part of the measurement, control the delivered RF power and account for the measurement path in the calibration procedure.

Metrology-Grade RF Reference Solution

Establish the RF reference with a source whose residual noise, distortion, and spurious content remain sufficiently below the behavior you need to characterize. The Keysight SG6311A Pro XG7 analog signal generator covers 9 kHz to 20 GHz and provides clean, calibrated output power up to +22 dBm. Low phase noise, amplitude modulation (AM) noise, broadband noise, harmonics, and non-harmonic spurious signals help preserve visibility into the instrument or device under test. Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) compatibility supports integration into established calibration automation, helping you create a controlled, repeatable RF reference while reducing the source's contribution to measurement uncertainty.
