Ethernet FEC Error Debug

Forward error correction (FEC) debug requires a multirate Ethernet test setup connected to the transceiver, copper cable, retimer, or silicon interface under test. The setup runs Ethernet traffic while collecting bit error rate, lane-level statistics, forward error correction symbol error density, burst tolerance, and margin data across the active lanes.

The test compares error behavior across lanes and time to identify whether errors are random, bursty, localized to one lane, or correlated with a specific interface path. Engineers use the resulting error distribution and lane-level measurements to isolate weak optical paths, marginal copper interconnects, retimer instability, or device-side receiver sensitivity.

Perform the test by generating Ethernet traffic while monitoring forward error correction behavior in real time at the symbol, lane, and packet levels. Keysight's Multirate Test System combines pulse amplitude modulation four-level (PAM4) bit error ratio (BER) measurements, real-time forward error correction analysis, and Layer 1 to Layer 2 traffic generation across multirate Ethernet interfaces. The system provides bit error ratio (BER), forward error correction (FEC), and packet statistics across lanes and ports so engineers can compare error behavior throughout the signal path.
