Investigating Implications of ITS-G5 and C-V2X Simultaneous Operation in Adjacent Channels

Modern vehicle-to-everything (V2X) industrial development for intelligent transport systems (ITS) spans two distinct technologies:

  • 3rd Generation Partnership Project cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X)
  • ITS-G5, based on the IEEE 802.11p standard

 

In Europe, these two technology domains can legally operate in parallel in the 5.9 GHz band with spectrum licensing and sharing, which raises a serious concern when analyzing the potential interference risks and regulatory issues. In this paper, we measure the effects by performing demodulation and spectrum measurements in the case of channel coexistence between the two technologies at 5.9 GHz.

 

The Setup

We set out to perform a series of experiments to study the performance of Autotalks ITS-G5 and C-V2X transmitters in calibration mode under severe interference. This measurement aimed to verify possible issues with spectral purity and the devices’ operation with and without a 10 MHz gap between signals. To ensure signal quality, we used a Keysight N9030B PXA signal analyzer with 802.11p demodulation software. We did not use a signal generator for interference generation as we decided to emulate real-life scenarios with devices under test (DUTs).
