The main purpose of a portable digital multimeter (DMM) is to provide convenience and flexibility for fieldwork, troubleshooting, and on-site diagnostics. Portable DMMs are compact, battery-powered, and designed for mobility, making them ideal for electricians, technicians, or engineers who need quick, reliable measurements in different locations. In contrast, a benchtop DMM prioritizes higher accuracy, stability, and advanced measurement features. Benchtop models are typically used in laboratories, R&D, or production testing, where precision, repeatability, and advanced analysis capabilities are more critical than portability.
Portable digital multimeters can serve as temperature data loggers. For example, Keysight portable DMMs can accept many different types of thermocouple sensors. There are accompanying PC or mobile software to perform data logging and temperature profiling.
Here are the steps to perform data logging with a DMM:
The low input impedance function in a portable DMM is designed to remove ghost or induced voltages from measurements. This function works by presenting low impedance across the leads to obtain a more accurate measurement. The low impedance reduces the possibility of false readings in areas where the presence of ghost voltages is suspected. These stray voltages are normally caused by capacitive coupling between energized wiring and adjacent unused wiring.
Key uses of the low impedance function:
