Evaluate Control Loop Response

Characterizing power supply feedback loops requires gain and phase measurements across frequency to show how the control path responds to an injected stimulus. Engineers use frequency response analysis (FRA) to observe loop behavior, review gain and phase margins, and determine whether the compensation network is producing the expected response under the selected operating conditions. The measurement setup must inject a swept sine signal into the loop and capture both the applied stimulus and the resulting response.

Injecting the stimulus and measuring the response requires an oscilloscope with built-in waveform generation and software that can calculate loop gain and phase across the sweep range. In this setup, the oscilloscope drives the loop with the swept signal while simultaneously measuring the response needed to generate a Bode plot.
