Verifying the RF performance of a 5G NR device requires staying updated with the latest standards and protocols. Analyzing the RF behavior of a 5G NR device to optimize its design requires thorough RF testing, which can be time-consuming. Design engineers can expedite this process with built-in tests and automation.
Consider test solutions with the following features to accelerate the testing process:
Introduced in 3GPP Release 17 (R17), a RedCap device is a 5G NR device with reduced capabilities compared to conventional ones, designed to address medium-throughput and latency use cases, such as the Internet of Things (IoT). To ensure connectivity, RedCap devices require testing for specific parameters.
Test engineers need to emulate the network to perform both signaling and non-signaling testing across the RF, protocol, and functional / performance domains. The solution needed to characterize a 5G NR RedCap device must support 3GPP R17 and other cellular Internet of Things (IoT) technologies commonly used in IoT devices, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT).
Wi-Fi 7 devices must handle multiple high-bandwidth applications simultaneously, increasing device complexity and generating new testing challenges. Wi-Fi 7 device performance testing requires RF testing with signaling against the Wi-Fi 7 standards to test the device under complex network conditions.
These tests verify that the device can achieve and maintain high data rates in real-world scenarios, handle sophisticated modulations and multi-link operations (MLO), and comply with the standards for signal strength, spectrum usage, and avoid interference with other services.
5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) require overcoming implementation challenges to ensure physical, protocol, and application layer compatibility, address propagation conditions, and achieve standards compliance and performance benchmarks.
Test engineers can emulate different components of a 5G NTN in their lab using channel and network emulators to measure application-level parameters, such as energy consumption, protocol, RF, throughput, and latency. They can also replicate scenarios and make measurements using automation software.
