Testing RedCap signaling requires verifying the system's functionality and ability to communicate with other components. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced new signaling information elements and procedures tailored explicitly for RedCap devices, including a new network access procedure and RF test cases. By performing lab validation ahead of time to identify and correct design issues, chipset, device, and module manufacturers can shorten the certification process for RedCap and other Consumer Internet of Things (C-IoT) devices. Testing should cover ping tests, connectivity to IoT platforms, throughput, network reliability, and data transmission.
To ensure RedCap devices can achieve and maintain connectivity, test engineers must test specific RedCap parameters. Engineers need a network emulation solution that covers non-signaling and signaling testing in different domains, including protocol, RF, functional verification, and performance testing in real conditions. The solution must support 5G Release 17 RedCap and legacy C-IoT technologies. Software is necessary to report and analyze test results and help debug.
