How to Generate Low-Phase-Noise RF Signals

Analog Signal Generator
+ Analog Signal Generator

Low Phase Noise Setup

Set up a signal generator with the carrier frequency, output level, and reference source required for the measurement, then route the output through a calibrated RF path into the oscillator or receiver under test. Record single-sideband phase noise, harmonics, spurious content, and output power at defined offsets while keeping attenuation and cabling fixed across runs.

For receiver characterization, apply a clean carrier or a controlled offset tone and compare the response with a spectrum analyzer or phase-noise measurement system. When substitution testing is needed, vary the reference configuration, frequency, and output level to observe close-in stability, pedestal noise, and drift across the device under test.

Low-Phase-Noise Signal Generator Solution

Perform the test with a source that holds carrier purity across the offset range, then verify single-sideband (SSB) phase noise, spurious content, harmonics, and output power at the required frequencies. The solution includes compact and high-performance analog signal generators with a high-stability oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) reference, wide external 10 MHz and 100 MHz reference support, and fast switching for receiver and oscillator substitution work. AM, FM, PM, and pulse modulation options support controlled stress testing and phase-synchronized setups.
