Characterize RF Components With FieldFox

Radio frequency (RF) component characterization with a FieldFox handheld analyzer begins by connecting the device under test to the analyzer's test ports and establishing calibrated measurement reference planes. Configure the required frequency range, source power, intermediate-frequency bandwidth, and measurement points, then perform the appropriate calibration before connecting the device. For two-port network measurements, the analyzer applies a swept RF stimulus and measures incident, reflected, and transmitted signals. The resulting S-parameter measurements characterize the device using S11 input reflection, S21 forward transmission, S12 reverse transmission, and S22 output reflection. Engineers can use these measurements for filters, cables, antennas, amplifiers, and other RF and microwave components while working at a bench or directly at the equipment under test.

During RF component characterization, FieldFox sweeps the selected frequency range and measures the magnitude and phase relationships required for RF network analysis. Forward transmission measurements characterize insertion loss or gain, while reflection measurements characterize return loss and impedance behavior. Reverse transmission and output reflection complete the four S-parameters needed for full two-port characterization. Measurement results can be viewed using formats such as logarithmic magnitude, phase, and Smith chart displays, with markers used to examine frequencies and response characteristics of interest. The portable vector network analyzer workflow enables engineers to perform calibrated measurements close to installed RF components, cables, antennas, and other devices without moving the device under test to a conventional laboratory setup.

FieldFox S-Parameter Measurement Solution

Perform the measurement by calibrating the FieldFox handheld analyzer at the required reference planes, connecting the RF component, and sweeping the device across its operating frequency range. FieldFox provides the vector network analyzer capability required to make S-parameter measurements in a portable instrument, supporting RF component characterization at the bench or directly in the field. Two-port measurements provide S11, S21, S12, and S22 for evaluating input reflection, forward transmission, reverse transmission, and output reflection. Engineers can use these results to examine insertion loss, return loss, gain, matching, and frequency response as part of an RF network analysis workflow. Calibration establishes the measurement reference plane and reduces systematic measurement errors before the device under test is characterized. Magnitude, phase, Smith chart, and marker-based views then provide the measurement information required for calibrated two-port network measurements using a single handheld platform.
