Emulate Battery States During Charger Operation

Battery charger validation requires reproducing the electrical conditions presented by a battery while measuring how the charging circuit regulates voltage and current throughout its operating range. A programmable electronic load operating in constant-voltage mode can emulate the battery-side terminal condition by maintaining a defined voltage while allowing the charger under test to establish the corresponding charging current. Program a sequence of battery-equivalent voltage levels representing different points within the intended charging range and measure charger output voltage and current at each operating point. The resulting data characterize how the charger responds as the emulated battery terminal voltage changes and show whether the charging circuit maintains the expected regulation behavior throughout the selected operating conditions.

Extend the measurement across the charger's operating sequence by changing the emulated battery voltage in controlled increments and recording voltage, current, and temperature where thermal behavior must also be evaluated. Measurements at lower and higher battery-equivalent voltages characterize charging-current behavior across the operating range, while measurements near regulation boundaries show how the charger transitions between charging states. Additional test conditions can reproduce maintenance or no-battery operation when these modes are supported by the charger design. Repeating the same programmed voltage sequence provides consistent conditions for comparing charger behavior across input conditions, operating temperatures, design revisions, or protection settings without relying on the changing state of charge of a physical battery.

Battery Charger Operating-State Validation Solution

Testing battery charger operating states requires reproducing battery-side voltage conditions while measuring charging current, terminal voltage, and temperature as the charger progresses through its operating range. The solution uses a Keysight benchtop DC electronic load in constant-voltage mode to emulate defined battery terminal conditions and measure the current supplied by the charger at each programmed voltage. A Keysight data acquisition system with a multiplexer module provides additional voltage and temperature measurements at selected points in the charger and battery interface. Recorded measurements show how charging current, terminal voltage, and thermal conditions change across each emulated battery state. This approach supports repeatable charger characterization across multiple voltage levels, charging states, and operating conditions.
