How to Protect DAQ Measurements from Overvoltage

Protect Measurement Channels

Multichannel voltage measurement requires the data acquisition system (DAQ) to sequentially connect multiple test points to measurement circuitry while keeping each input within the supported voltage range of the switching hardware. In a low-voltage data acquisition configuration, signals from the device under test connect to individual multiplexer channels that are scanned in sequence. The setup must account for a channel that unexpectedly rises above its intended range because of a device condition, incorrect connection, or operating-state change. Automatic voltage safety monitoring detects an out-of-range input within the measurement path. When the protection circuitry detects an overvoltage condition, the affected measurement path is isolated from the DAQ backplane rather than allowing the excessive voltage to remain connected to downstream measurement circuitry, providing DAQ overvoltage protection during multichannel voltage measurement.

After the input condition is corrected and the voltage returns to the supported range, scanning or monitoring can resume. The DAQ controls the measurement sequence, while the multiplexer provides the switching paths needed to connect each selected channel to the measurement circuitry. Two- or four-wire switching can be selected according to the measurement configuration and test-point arrangement. For low-voltage data acquisition, the setup should define the expected signal range, maximum voltage at each input, channel connections, scan order, measurement functions, and system response to an abnormal voltage condition. Engineers can configure the channel list, acquire the required measurements, monitor for out-of-range inputs, respond to detected overvoltage conditions, and resume the measurement sequence after the electrical condition has been corrected. This combines channel switching, voltage monitoring, protection, and controlled recovery within the same multichannel voltage measurement workflow.

Overvoltage-Protected DAQ Solution

Performing reliable multichannel voltage measurements requires routing each signal through a multiplexer while ensuring that input voltages remain within the supported operating range of the switching and measurement hardware. The Keysight data acquisition system and 20-channel low-voltage multiplexer support low-voltage data acquisition with automated channel scanning and voltage safety monitoring. The multiplexer provides 20 channels of two- or four-wire switching and supports up to 40 Vpk for circuit protection and switching. When its high-voltage protection circuit detects an overvoltage condition, the protection response opens the module’s backplane relays, preventing the out-of-range input from remaining connected through the normal measurement path. After the input returns to the supported range, scanning or monitoring can resume. This DAQ overvoltage protection workflow combines multichannel voltage measurement, channel switching, overvoltage detection, and controlled recovery while helping protect downstream measurement hardware from unintended high-voltage conditions.
