Measure Fundamental Grid Current

Pre-island current balance is evaluated at the grid-isolation point while a distributed energy resource (DER) inverter continues operating in parallel with the simulated utility and resonant load. Engineers measure residual grid current and examine active and reactive power balance to establish the required operating conditions. The resistive branch of the resistance-inductance-capacitance (RLC) load is adjusted to absorb the inverter's real power, while the inductive and capacitive branches are adjusted to balance reactive power. The measurement goal is to minimize residual grid current before the island event. Monitoring electrical quantities across the three phases helps identify unequal operating conditions and provides a defined starting point for repeatable anti-islanding testing.

Measured current can include contributions from fundamental-frequency behavior, harmonics, and power-converter switching components. These additional components may remain present even when the resonant load is balanced at the fundamental frequency. Engineers can evaluate fundamental-frequency current balance alongside harmonic measurements to distinguish load-tuning effects from other components of the measured electrical response. Residual grid current is checked against the selected test criteria before the simulated grid connection is opened. Comparing measured current behavior across selected operating conditions helps engineers assess the effectiveness of resonant RLC tuning without assuming that harmonic distortion or switching-related components have been eliminated. Repeated measurements provide a consistent basis for evaluating pre-island current balance during three-phase anti-islanding testing.

Pre-Island Current Measurement Solution

Evaluating pre-island grid current imbalance requires accurate electrical measurements, active and reactive power assessment, and controlled resonant loading. Keysight regenerative AC / grid emulators integrate Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (PHIL) technology with resonant RLC autotuning to establish controlled island conditions without separate high-power passive load banks. Integrated measurements capture voltage, current, frequency, real and reactive power, phase, and harmonics, while programmable RLC tuning adjusts load conditions. Engineers can evaluate residual grid current and power balance before isolation, compare results across repeated test points, and reduce manual load adjustments during DER inverter anti-islanding testing.
