Analyze Spectral Insertion Loss

Engineers use a tunable optical source, calibrated reference measurement, and synchronized optical power acquisition to characterize the spectral transmission response of passive optical devices. During a programmable wavelength sweep, the system measures optical power transmitted through the device under test and compares the measurement with a stored reference to calculate insertion loss as a function of wavelength.

The test configuration coordinates wavelength sweeping, optical signal routing, and multiport optical power acquisition across multiple optical paths. Engineers analyze the resulting insertion loss spectrum to characterize wavelength-dependent attenuation, passband characteristics, and transmission behavior in optical filters, multiplexers, wavelength-selective devices, and other passive optical components.

Optical Insertion Loss Measurement Solution

Measuring optical insertion loss across wavelength requires a calibrated wavelength sweep and synchronized transmitted-power measurements. The Keysight optical insertion loss measurement solution combines a tunable laser, optical switch, and optical multiport power meter. The tunable laser generates the swept optical signal, the optical switch routes the signal through selected device-under-test paths, and the optical multiport power meter measures transmitted optical power across multiple output ports. The system compares these measurements with a stored reference to calculate insertion loss as a function of wavelength and characterize the spectral transmission response of passive optical components.
