How to Maintain Signal Generator Output Power with External Leveling

Control RF Source Power

Maintaining a controlled radio frequency (RF) power level at the device under test can be challenging when cables, adapters, fixtures, amplifiers, or other components introduce loss between the signal generator and the desired measurement plane. Setting the source output alone does not necessarily establish the same power at the device because losses in the signal path can change with frequency and test configuration. External leveling uses a power measurement near the desired reference plane as feedback so the source output can be adjusted to maintain the required power condition during testing.

The measurement configuration typically includes a compatible signal generator, USB power sensor, device under test, and required radio frequency interconnects. The sensor measures power at the selected point in the signal path and provides information used by the source-leveling workflow. Engineers define the desired power level and use the measured response to compensate for losses between the source and measurement point. This approach helps establish a controlled stimulus at the device under test for measurements where applied radio frequency power must remain consistent despite changes in the signal path.

External RF Power Leveling Solution

Integration between a compatible signal generator and USB power sensor enables measured radio frequency power to be incorporated into an external leveling workflow. Engineers position the sensor at the appropriate reference point in the signal path and establish communication between the sensor and compatible source. The sensor measures the delivered power, providing feedback that allows the source output level to be adjusted toward the requested value at the measurement plane rather than relying only on the generator's internally leveled output. This approach can compensate for losses introduced by external components between the source and the reference point and can also support automatic leveling of amplifier output in compatible configurations. Direct USB connectivity eliminates the need for a separate hardware power meter while allowing the sensor to function as the measurement element within the leveling loop. The resulting workflow supports controlled stimulus conditions for component characterization, receiver testing, amplifier measurements, and other radio frequency applications where the power delivered through the external test path must be established accurately.
