How to Measure Phased Array Radiation Patterns

Capture Spherical Radiation Patterns

Radiation-pattern measurement requires a controlled over-the-air environment that produces a known incident field across the phased array aperture. A compact antenna test range uses a shaped reflector and feed to create an indirect-far-field quiet zone within a shorter physical distance. The array is mounted on a positioner, configured to a defined beam state, and measured over azimuth and elevation while the receiver records amplitude, phase, or demodulated power.

The measurement sequence coordinates chamber motion, beamforming control, source and receiver settings, and polarization selection. Pattern data is transformed into two-dimensional cuts or a spherical result, then processed to determine peak direction, beamwidth, sidelobe level, null locations, directivity, gain, efficiency, and cross-polarization where the selected configuration supports those calculations. Repeating the scan across beam states verifies steering behavior and pattern consistency.

Phased Array Pattern Measurement Solution

Measure phased array radiation patterns by positioning the array in the compact-range quiet zone, selecting a beam state, and sweeping the device under test through the required angular grid. The F9650A provides the shielded indirect-far-field environment, reflector, feed system, and device positioning needed for repeatable over-the-air acquisition. Antenna measurement software coordinates angular motion, instrument triggering, polarization, and beam-state control, then calculates spherical and cut-plane results. Depending on the configured instruments and measurement mode, the solution can evaluate beam peak, half-power beamwidth, sidelobes, nulls, gain, directivity, efficiency, and cross-polarization. Automated scans across multiple beams support beam-steering verification and comparison of measured patterns with design targets.
