Highlights

The PNT X CRPA Test System is a complete COTS solution that combines multiple PNT X signal generators, an RF combiner matrix, and the SimGEN software suite to generate phase-aligned global navigation satellite system (GNSS) wavefronts for conducted and over-the-air testing of controlled reception pattern antenna (CRPA) systems — including beamforming, null steering, and space-time adaptive processing (STAP) evaluation.

CRPAs require rigorous testing for mission-critical applications. Accurate evaluation demands precise GNSS signal generation, phase alignment, and dynamic high-density jamming and spoofing threat representation. Comprehensive testing validates performance in extreme corner cases, accelerates development, and ensures systems can be trusted in operational environments.

CRPA wavefront simulation

  • Multiple PNT X signal generators combine via an external RF combiner matrix to deliver calibrated, phase-aligned RF signals to each element of a multi-element CRPA under test
  • Each signal generator provides up to 640 independent channels across 10 software-defined radio (SDR) cards — multi-chassis configurations scale to support CRPA systems from 2 – 20+ elements
  • 0.3 mm RMS pseudorange accuracy, and inter-antenna carrier phase alignment of <2° without the need for any runtime calibration and across a +/-5° temperature span
  • Up to 2 kHz system iteration rate reproduces high-dynamics vehicle motion — including missiles, spacecraft, and drones — with 2 ms hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) latency for adaptive antenna algorithm evaluation
  • Encrypted military signals capable, including GPS M-Code and Galileo PRS. Galileo PRS support via prs[ware] available at LZE/Fraunhofer.
  • Embedded GNSS/Inertial (EGI) simulation to characterize integrated navigation system performance
  • Precise signal carrier and code phase alignment to ensure fidelity and accurate results no matter how extreme the test requirements
  • Calibrated prior to scenario start to ensure precise wavefront alignment and sustained performance throughout the test

NAVWAR threat representation

  • Embedded L-band interference generates continuous wave (CW), frequency modulation (FM), amplitude modulation (AM), phase modulation (PM), additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), binary phase-shift keying (BPSK), COMB, chirp, and matched spectrum waveforms alongside GNSS signals to exercise null-steering and beamforming algorithms
  • Generates custom jamming waveforms with variable bandwidth
  • >130 dB Jammer to GNSS nominal signal ratio
  • Optional up to 140 dB of continuous dynamic range
  • Comprehensive spoofing testing supports meaconing, code/carrier attacks, and navigation data attacks to evaluate CRPA anti-spoofing response
  • Real-time 3D terrain modeling uses ray-tracing to realistically emulate signal propagation effects, including obscuration, diffraction, and multipath, for more representative PNT testing in complex environments
  • SimIQ Spatial Awareness transforms static IQ data into dynamic, motion-aware signals, enabling use of user-supplied IQ data or proprietary waveforms in test environments

System integration and security

  • All signal generators in the system are orchestrated by a single SimGEN scenario running on the C50 X host controller
  • Full support for GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS, IRNSS, and SBAS across L-band and S-band frequencies
  • Remote control via Ethernet or GPIB using SimREMOTE; gRPC schema supports Python, C++, and Java test automation for repeatable CRPA characterization
