Coin Cell Battery Testing and Modeling

Coin cell battery testing requires a controlled electrical connection, accurate voltage and current measurement, and a programmable source/load that can both source and sink current. A four-wire connection measures voltage at the battery terminals and reduces error from lead resistance. Begin with open-circuit voltage, then apply a defined load or dynamic current profile while recording terminal voltage and current. Battery capacity validation is performed by discharging the cell to a specified cut-off voltage and integrating the delivered charge. Internal resistance measurement uses short current pulses followed by rest periods, with resistance calculated from the corresponding change in load voltage and current. These measurements provide the electrical data needed to characterize the cell at defined operating conditions.

Battery modeling extends the test across state of charge by periodically measuring open-circuit voltage and series internal resistance as the cell is discharged. The pulse width and rest time are set to match the behavior of the intended device so the model reflects the cell response under representative current demand. Battery discharge testing can use constant current or an imported dynamic load profile, with voltage, current, extracted capacity, and temperature logged throughout the run. The test stops when the selected cut-off condition is reached, such as open-circuit voltage, load voltage, or consumed capacity. The resulting battery model can be exported for analysis or reused for battery emulation, while the measured capacity can be compared with the cell specification or a reference sample.

Coin Cell Battery Test Solution

Perform the test by connecting the coin cell with remote sense leads and applying a controlled discharge profile while measuring terminal voltage and current. The Expert Benchtop Source Measure Unit provides a two-quadrant source/measure platform for coin cell battery testing, allowing controlled sourcing and sinking together with precise electrical measurement. The setup can capture open-circuit voltage, load voltage, current, extracted capacity, and the short-pulse response used for internal resistance measurement. Battery modeling is created by repeating open-circuit voltage and resistance measurements at defined state-of-charge intervals during discharge. For battery capacity validation, the cell is discharged to a selected cut-off condition while delivered charge is accumulated. Battery discharge testing can use constant or dynamic current profiles, and data logging supports later analysis of voltage, current, capacity, and model parameters. The same workflow can also create a model for subsequent battery emulation.
