    Battery performance defines the success of modern technologies, from electric vehicles and renewable energy storage to portable devices and aerospace systems. Yet, validating these battery-powered designs directly with physical cells is slow, costly, and often unsafe. Traditional test setups require charging and discharging real batteries for hours or even days, consuming significant energy while creating risks of overheating, fire, or degradation. These constraints limit test coverage, slow development cycles, and reduce confidence in long-term performance.

     

    This demo video introduces a safer and smarter approach: battery profiling and emulation using Keysight high-power ATE system power supplies. Instead of relying on physical cells, you first capture a real battery profile — the voltage, current, and thermal behavior observed under operating conditions. This profile is then recreated digitally within Keysight automated power suite software, producing a precise “digital twin” of the battery.

     

    By connecting the device under test (DUT) to a high-power ATE power supply configured with this profile, you can validate system response as though a live battery were in place. The advantage is control: state of charge (SoC), temperature, and dynamic conditions can be adjusted instantly without swapping hardware. You can simulate cold-start behavior at low SoC, validate recovery from ripple or transients, or reproduce long-duration discharge cycles — all under safe, programmable conditions.

     

    This methodology addresses three key challenges:

    • Iteration speed – Instead of waiting hours for a real battery to discharge, you can instantly set the SoC and temperature of the emulated profile, accelerating design validation.
    • Safety and repeatability – Emulation eliminates the fire and degradation risks of real cells, while software automation ensures each test is performed under consistent, documented conditions.
    • Energy efficiency – With regenerative operation, power from discharge phases is returned to the grid rather than dissipated as heat. This reduces energy consumption, lowers cooling overhead, and enables longer tests without stressing facilities.

     

    The demo illustrates how profiling and emulation enhance insight. We begin with a lithium-ion pack at 50% SoC and 25°C, validating stable DUT response. Next, we adjust the conditions to 20% SoC at 0°C, replicating cold-start challenges that are difficult to achieve safely with physical batteries. Each transition is logged with sub-millisecond resolution, providing actionable data on ripple, stability, and transient response.

     

    Beyond individual tests, scalability is a defining feature. Keysight high-power ATE power supplies deliver up to 192 kilowatts in regenerative power, packaged in high-density units that save rack and floor space. This scalability allows teams to transition from single-bench experiments to full lab deployments without re-architecting infrastructure. Combined with software automation, engineers can configure once and reuse across different battery chemistries, applications, and mission scenarios.

     

    In industries where reliability is paramount — from energy storage systems and electric mobility to aerospace platforms — battery profiling and emulation transforms validation. Instead of compromises between coverage, safety, and efficiency, you achieve all three. You gain deeper insights into system behavior, accelerate project timelines, and reduce operating costs.
