Emulate Grid Network Degradation

A grid communication failover test requires a representative Ethernet path between the devices or applications under test, with controlled impairment applied between the endpoints. Establish baseline operation first, then configure reproducible network conditions that represent degraded service. The test can vary network delay and other Ethernet impairments while monitoring application behavior, traffic delivery, and the transition between normal and degraded operation.

For recovery testing, progressively apply impairment or introduce an outage condition and observe the system response. Controlled bit errors and frame drops can be used to stress the communication path, while dynamically increasing impairment provides a way to determine when failure-recovery mechanisms activate. Test sequences can be automated through a RESTful Web API using languages such as Python or through Tcl.

Start with a baseline Ethernet communication path, then introduce repeatable impairment profiles and progressively increase degradation while monitoring the grid communication application. Network Emulator II provides 10GE, 1GE, and 100MbE Ethernet impairment emulation through an eight-port FPGA-based architecture. It can reproduce network delay, apply controlled bit errors and frame drops, and dynamically increase impairments to test failure-recovery mechanisms. The platform supports mixed Ethernet speeds and provides RESTful Web API control for test automation. It can also be combined with IxNetwork, IxLoad, or BreakingPoint to add traffic or security test scenarios to an impaired network environment.
