Reproduce Complex Transient Events

Transient electrical events can contain rapid amplitude changes, overshoot, ringing, decay, and timing variations that standard sine, square, pulse, or ramp signals cannot reproduce as a single stimulus. When an event occurs unpredictably or only once, engineers cannot repeatedly expose a device under test (DUT) to the same electrical condition, making comparison across operating points or design revisions difficult.

Recreating the event requires preserving its measured voltage-versus-time profile, scaling it to the target interface, and applying it repeatedly with consistent timing. The original transient, reproduced input, and DUT response are captured with an oscilloscope and compared for amplitude, timing, overshoot, recovery, clipping, and ringing. This separates repeatable device behavior from variations in the original event.

Recorded Transient Replay Solution

Perform the test by converting an oscilloscope capture into sampled voltage-versus-time data, loading the data as an arbitrary waveform, and replaying it into the device under test while an oscilloscope records the response. Advanced Benchtop Waveform and Function Generators, equipped with their optional arbitrary-waveform capability, provides a 20 MHz, single-channel source with a maximum sample rate of 160 MSa/s for repeatable transient playback. Configure sample rate, amplitude, offset, output termination, filtering, trigger mode, and repetition interval to reproduce the intended waveform at the device input. Compare the replayed signal with the original capture before interpreting the device response.
