How to Simulate Site-Specific Wireless Propagation

Model Site-Specific RF Propagation

Site-specific RF ray traced propagation simulations complement traditional stochastic modeling by bringing the actual deployment environment into the validation workflow. They combine a three-dimensional representation of the physical environment with transmitter and receiver locations, antenna characteristics, frequency settings, and RF properties for materials in the scene.

Engineers then reproduce and analyze deterministic propagation effects created by specific buildings, vegetation, and other environmental attributes before or after problems emerge in the field. When paired with an RF channel emulator, ray-traced channel models can be replayed live in the lab, turning a digital twin of any site into a repeatable, hardware-in-the-loop test environment for real devices and base stations.

RF Digital Twin and Hardware-In-The-Loop Testing Solution

Combining ray-tracing simulations with RF channel emulation allows engineers to test devices against repeatable, site-specific propagation conditions. Keysight's RaySim's ray-traced channel data — delays, gains, angles, and Doppler — connects directly into its PROPSIM real-time RF channel emulators, closing the loop between simulation and the lab bench. Instead of costly field trials, engineering teams replay the exact multipath conditions of a real site whether it be a stadium, a factory floor, or a highway corridor onto live chipsets, user equipment, and base stations under test. The scenario is deterministic and repeatable enabling teams to re-run the exact same RF environment across firmware builds, regression-test against the same "site" every time, and correlate with over-the-air field and simulated performance.
