How to Validate Radar Pulse Compression Performance

Evaluate Radar Pulse Compression Performance

Pulse-compression testing requires generating modulated radio frequency (RF) pulses with controlled pulse width, repetition rate, power, frequency, and modulation. Linear frequency modulation sweeps, binary phase coding such as Barker codes, and polyphase coding such as Costas codes can be applied to reproduce different compression schemes.

The received waveform is processed with a matched-correlation filter that compares the received and transmitted pulses. Engineers can evaluate the resulting compressed pulse, time-domain sidelobes, range resolution, and response to Doppler frequency shifts while varying waveform parameters to characterize the radar processing chain.

Radar Pulse Compression Validation Solution

Pulse-compression validation requires generating controlled modulated RF pulses and comparing the resulting receiver response with the transmitted waveform. Keysight Agile Signal Generators create radar pulses with controlled frequency, amplitude, timing, phase, and modulation characteristics. At the receiver, matched-correlation processing compresses the longer modulated pulse into a narrower response. Engineers can then characterize compressed-pulse width, time-domain sidelobes, range-resolution behavior, and sensitivity to Doppler frequency shifts while changing the generated radar waveform under repeatable test conditions.
